Active Transportation Access

The stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge includes dedicated walking and cycling lanes, separated from traffic by a barrier on both sides of the bridge deck, and better connections to, from and near the bridge.

How to Cross the Fraser River

The multi-use path (MUP) on the east side of the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge is open to pedestrians and cyclists in both directions. In New Westminster, it connects over the new overpass across Columbia Street, and existing MUP and sidewalk network (see image below).

Construction of the future MUP network is ongoing, and the MUP on the west side of the bridge is scheduled to open this summer.

In Surrey, the MUP on the east side of the stal̕əw̓asəm Bridge connects to the sidewalk and existing bike routes on the north and south sides of King George Boulevard. Cyclists using the MUP on the bridge are required to dismount in the area shown in the image below, as the path is temporarily narrower while work continues to widen the south approach in this location. This work could not begin until the Pattullo Bridge approach was removed.

Temporary Closure of Central Valley Greenway

A section of the Central Valley Greenway, between McBride Boulevard and Elliot Street in New Westminster, is temporarily closed while crews construct the Columbia Street on-ramp and multi-use paths. Detour options are shown in the graphic below.
